July Selfies

Snapping up a quick selfie check-in with Urban Muser's {in the picture}.

In The Picture

I remember starting this adventure way back in January.  It was Christy's NY resolution that she invited others to join in on.  I'm not a resolution girl, but thought...."I'm not the one making the resolution".  So it was mine to stay with or not, without consequence.  But I have stayed on while the participant field has thinned.

I enjoy seeing fellow selfie survivors who have stuck it out-the things they share at the end of the month in the link up.  If you fell off the bandwagon (and how come the band keeps loosing members, but the hay wagon stays intact?), I'm sure you could climb aboard again and that would be fine.  You'd be welcome for sure.

This month's suggested theme was reflection which was easy for me, because I do that anyway.  Sort of my way of keeping track of myself since no one else is doing it.  Self-sufficient selfies.  Hmmmm.

Backpack Selfie
Backpack Selfie

I shared this in another post recently, but this was a backpack check.  I had to buy that monstrosity before Cuba as I had a ton of equipment.  The thing checked in at 23 pounds fully loaded.  Don't know that it cuts a slimming profile, but it did the job.  Does my butt look big in this backpack?  Hee, hee, hee.

Photog On the Job BW
Photog On the Job

My job in Cuba was to document the 110 members of the chorus as they went about doing what they were doing....but a girl's gotta do a little personal stuff here and there; right?
In a window outside a hotel restaurant.  I think I was hungry and lingering about.

Cuba Selfie
Cuba Selfie

OK...not a reflection, but I really like this image.  One of my fave selfies I've taken thus far this year.  The terrace at the Hotel Nacional.  It's one of the most famous hotels in Havana and I understand that a scene or two from Godfather may have been filmed here.  I'm going to have to check out that film again now that I've been there.
"I know it was you Fredo.  You broke my heart."

Planker BW

And to make up for last month when I didn't get the plank done, I thought to do one of those too.  Was trying not to think about who might have been sitting in that spot last.  Ummm...yuck.  There is a little reflection on the coffee table too.  I'm covered.

Guess that gives you the quick version of July, and a touch of June too.

Scavenging

Linking with Ashley for this week's Scavenger Hunt Sunday.

Finally a weekend off!  Woot.  Twelve days in a row without one to yourself is just too much.  Today is going to be a me day to spend/waste in whatever way I see fit.  Isn't that the bomb?

In Peg's Garden
In Peg's Garden

Paint:  OK, so this is not paint, nor does it look like paint.  It's pretty.  I tried to remember how to do a "painterly" technique I learned in class last spring.  I think I need to review the notes.

Green

Green:  Ferns are always such a lush color green.  Pretty common around here in the woods and in north facing areas.

Watching You

Eyelashes:  How can one not take a photo of this?   From a gazebo on a hillside overlooking a cove.  Always watching I guess.

Shapes:  Love these silhouette shapes from the Miami airport.

Layered Sky

Clouds:  I simply have not taken in enough sunsets of late.  Glad I caught this one on Friday night.

Confessing to a little raiding of the back stacks to get this one done, but pleased to say I've been out and about with my camera a little more this week.  For those who know Tula....her stitches are coming out on Monday-been taking it easy at home with my girl.  It doesn't feel right sneaking out to take photos without my companion.  Soon she's allowed a 1/4 mile walk...oh the places we'll go.

Have a great day and a great week too.  Thanks for stopping by.

Sign of the Times

Linking with Kat for this month's Exploring with a Camera.

This month's topic....signs.  I totally dig signs!

Between having a hobbled up dog and having taken more than 7,000 pics in Cuba, my camera has been resting most of the time.  I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, why add to the stress?  I do however have lots of signs "out back" in the nether reaches of my photo files.  I thought some of those might be fun to share....because signs are everywhere.

Trample?
Trample?

Old signs can be kind of funny.  I found this one on an old barn one day when I was showing property.  BTW....they didn't buy this one.

Shaker Farm

Not so sure this is about the sign, but I often think a sign helps create a mood....real or imagined.

Dusk

Neon signs are so colorful....and lobster signs?  Well anyone who hangs out one of those this time of year is sure to get some business.

Palace Diner

This "ladies invited" sign continues to interest me, and scare me a little too.

Broken Dreams

There was something so incredibly sad about this sign, I had to capture it.  Looking at it again makes me feel sad.

Apparently a literacy problem.

Temptation

More signs here than first meets the eye.

Making Art BW

One of my favorite kind of signs-graffiti....but the message on the left is what caught me.

I guess that's enough to prove that I really do like signs.  They appear in my images, even when I'm not thinking about it, but I think it may be a good challenge to be more aware of signage.  I'm sure to find some great shots.  Thanks Kat.  I enjoyed this exploring.  What am I saying?  I always enjoy exploring.

Pinkalicious Scavenger

Linking with Ashley for this week's Scavenger Hunt Sunday.

I haven't picked up my camera all week....other than to take some pathetic shots of my dog who is recovering from surgery.  So today it was super fab to attend my niece's 4th birthday party where the theme was "pinkalicious".  I'm making my SHS work from all one source.  That's getting creative.

Little Piggies BW

Wrapped:  I love this shot.  Is it OK to love your own pics?  The whole grass between the toes thing grosses me out a bit, but that's why I'm an aunt and not a mom.  Those feet are wrapped together pretty tightly.

Hammock

Time Together:  No clue who this mom and daughter are, but they were enjoying quiet time together and staying away from the wild and crazy pinkalicious magic wand making table.

Turning Four

Tell me a Story:  I like when a photo tells a story.  It's something I think I need to be better about capturing.  This one definitely needs no words.  Hope her wishes come true.

Love or Couple:  My brother is a really great Dad.....and let me tell you, he is totally smitten with his baby girl. Here he is helping her with the scavenger hunt list. (3 rings, 2 gold coins, 4 glitter stars, etc)

Kiwi Fruit Salad

Duplicated:  Two kiwi slices?  Maybe?  Or me remembering that last birthday party I brought a fruit salad that looked just like this....they copied off me.  Glad they did, it was delicious.

Thanks for checking in with my scavenging for this week.  Hope your weekend was warm and pleasant.
Oh, and what did I get my niece for her pinkalicious birthday?  A tutu.  Unfortunately the gifts were not opened while I was there (and I waited a long time).  Hope she liked it.

Weekend Reflections

Linking with the awesome James for this weeks Weekend Reflections.  Thank you maestro.

While in Cuba out of necessity I had to do a lot of shooting with bright midday sun. Not my favorite. I do have some reflection shots-but still inching my way through the 4,000+ pics.  I think it may be awhile.  It seems like such a fun idea to shoot a gazillion pics; not so much when it's time to edit.

So, thought I share some pre-Cuba images I took while I was giving the rental lenses a little practice time.  Boy am I missing them.  A lot.  If only I had $1500 to spend.  Lottery anyone?

Dory at Low Tide {26/52}
Dory at Low Tide

There are 3 dories strung together that appear in summer months near tourist hotspot Kennebunkport.  Me thinks they put them there to lure tourists cameras.  I took the bait as well....I love the muted reflections behind from the other side of the river.

A selfie.  Why not?
Had to buy that big bag to get all the "stuff" I needed to Cuba.  Yikes.  Love the bag, but don't anticipate needing something so large again.  Then again, you never know-there's the gorgeous 24-70mm 2.8 that I'm missing, she said longingly.

Happy reflective weekend to all.

Rescuing Tula

Happy Dog
Happy Dog

This is my dog Tula.  Tula Dot.  She is a 6 year old rescue dog, I've had nearly her whole life.  Just not quite long enough to avoid her being enormously fearful, skittish, and timid.  Of just about everything, especially big trucks-UPS, garbage, dump trucks, construction vehicles.  She also responds negatively to the "beep, beep, beep" back up noise, so it's not just about loud noises.  She is totally fine with my drumming.  She does like people it just takes 20 minutes of patience to get on her good side.  When people are disappointed that a sweet faced girl won't interact I tell them "you could be Santa Claus and she still wouldn't come over".  It helps.

Anyway...Tula is most happy in places away from scary vehicles and crowds.  Get my little miss to the beach or a field or a trail in the woods-instant happy dog.  And don't think that her life isn't good.  She has it real good, from yours truly.

One Bum Leg
One Bum Leg

Two days back she had surgery.  A CCL-which is the equivalent to an ACL that athletes get and puts them out for a year.  So, my poor girl is all shaved in funny places and all wrapped up.  I'm feeling badly for her.  I think she's more stressed about the big scary bandage thingy that's totally different from the normal, please and thank you, than anything else.

Tula

I suppose no one wants to see a shaved doggy thigh, sorry about that.  Just proving that it's a big scary bandage thingy.

Sad Today
Sad Today

I suppose it's good that this wasn't from a sudden painful injury, it's a genetic problem (and it hopefully won't genetic over to the left leg).  Currently I'm feeling guilty and wondering if I did the right thing for my girl.  It's a couple months rehab....and of course $2,000 of MY money.  Yikes.  I guess I'll squeeze another year out of that 1999 Subaru wagon with 196,000 miles.

But how could I not?

Finding Happy
Finding Happy

Any little warm and fuzzy healing thoughts you'd care to pass through your mind sometime during your day, I'm sure Tula would appreciate.   Any thoughts that I might feel less stressed and be able to sleep tonight would be appreciated too.

Scavenger a la Cuba

Linking with Ashley for this week's Scavenger Hunt Sunday.  Can you believe that crazy mama be doing the SHS already?  Baby ain't but two weeks old and Ashley's back.  Can you say "type A personality"?  I think that's why I respect her so much.

It's only been a few days since I returned from Cuba after having taken more than 7,000 images.  I've pared that down to 4,400 that have some possibility and I'm sure that will shrink some more as the days go by.

My main job was to take images of the choral group I was there with, but couldn't help casting my eyes about for other opportunities between activities.  I truly haven't processed many images yet as I'm trying to catch up with Lightroom.  I think it will be a much better, easier and sane way to tackle so many photos.  Hard to wait though.

Thought I'd make my hunt this week from some things I collected while there that I processed early.  Too hard to totally wait.

Havana Waterfront

Water:  Take away the La Cubana Fortress and this reminds me of home.

Sidewalk Decor

Petal:  A lone petal found on a neighborhood sidewalk.

Safe Fruit

Fresh:  At a local market.  Had to be very careful what to eat.  Bananas and mangos were "OK".  I rather like that mango juice.

Eight Umbrellas
Eight Umbrellas

Eight:  At an opera show in the midday sun.  The show was so good several chorus members sat in the bright sun under parasols.....vs. para agua for when it's raining.

Red Bike
Red Bike

Calm:  I like the solitude of this image.  As the sun moves down, the streets shift from quiet to busy.  Locals wait-smart.  Here's a lone cyclist in Cienfuegoes enjoying that time period between the levels of activity.

These images don't feel very "Cuba-ish", so I'll add a bonus shot that meets none of the topics for this week.  I just like it.

Street Sign

That's it for my Cuba inspired scavenger for this week.  Now back to studying up on Lightroom so I can put that into effect and get some of my favorite photos sorted and processed.  Wish me luck.  Call in the national guard if I don't surface after a few weeks.  Have a great day.

Scavenger Hunt

Linking up with Ashley for Scavenger Hunt Sunday

....last chance to link up before heading off to Cuba.  It will seem so strange to be unplugged from phone and internet.  Likely very freeing as well.

When I traveled to Croatia in 2007, upon return I chose to give up watching any news or reading the paper.  Must say-haven't missed it a bit.  All the big stories you hear about anyway.  Try it, you might like it.  Be interesting to see what changes will happen after this trip.

Sweet Summer
Sweet Summer

Sunset:  Me got no sunsets of late.  What?  I love this time of year for its late day light, but I haven't been staying out late enough for sunsets.  Here's a fishing boat caught in the light of the sun heading down.

Big Sister
Big Sister

Sweet:  This was an image I took about a year ago and never processed.  I thought this moment between sister and brother on a ferry boat was very touching.

Barn Door {25/52}

Hanging Around:  Hanging vines.  Yes, I put on the brakes and backed up to get this shot.  Is it not an idealistic view of rural life?

Looking for French Fries

Funny Face:  These gulls know how to work the tourists.   The tourists don't seem to know that they're scavengers.  This gull tho' had rather an endearing look, but I didn't feed him.

Maine Woods {25/52}
Maine Woods

Space:  Sometimes I forget what a beautiful state I live in.  This rarely traveled dirt road was peaceful early on a Saturday morning.  Not another soul around in miles of woods; but plenty of hungry mosquitoes.

That's it.  Another Scavenger Hunt in the bag.  Thanks for stopping by.  Save my place while I'm gone.  I'll catch you in two.
