Home Run!

Linking with my Philly girl Kathy for Songography

Home for the holidays.  Yup.  I went home for the holidays.  Made that 2 1/2 mile trek....driving conditions were clear so I was there in 5, well maybe 6 minutes.  Phew.

The Tree

My brother and sister-in-law have 2 kiddos 5 and 7, so really this holiday is about them.  I could pass it right by and just go get a coffee with my best, but the rest of the family finds much joy in the day.  It was fun to see the magic that lives in children this time of year, that somehow left my building a long time ago.  Elvis musta grabbed it on his way out.

Sharing Barbie Secrets BW

My niece got about a million Barbies and Barbie accoutrements this year (including a kick-ass karate Barbie outfit from ME!).  This one had a twisty thing and then the dress flapped open when you hit a button or something like that.  She was happy.

The New Toys

Thomas the Train is soooooo done.  Now it's Star Wars and more Star Wars-especially if there are Legos.  A couple of those droids ended up being my "guys" during the Sorry game we played later.

Go Pats!

Yes, the big kid's eyes still twinkle at Christmas.  He's rockin' the hat the grand kids gave him.  I'm thinking he's all set to attend a game in January or take care of any needed snow-blowing-or both!

Father Son 116/365

But here's the winner of the day for me.  My nephew can be an imp, but he left the imp home and had a fun day.  No way the milkman stepped in on this one.

Hope your home was happy for the holidays-or you went to a really good movie.

What's Black and White and Red All Over?

I don't have much on my mind lately.  Maybe that's a good thing.  Maybe from time to time a mind needs to just "chill out", pardon the photo referencing pun. Unintended.  I do that a lot, make unintended puns.  I never really thought puns were that funny-they're just something quirky that spills out of nowhere.   Wonder what that's about.  I think my mind even at rest may be overactive.  Wonder what that's about too.  Maybe I should let that alone.

See I told you I don't have much on my mind.

Where was I?  Oh yes, chilling out.

Don't think there's a pun for this one.

I have been focusing on black and white photography.  At least trying to focus on it.  I was hoping that I'd start seeing in black and white when I was out shooting.  It's happened once or twice, but rarely while actively shooting the photos.  I am seeing what will convert better when I upload what I've taken.  It will happen.  Practice, practice, practice.

Now this one.  This one I just knew.  Maybe it was so obvious even a caveman could do it.  Or maybe it's a start.

Oh-do you remember those riddles-what's black and white and red all over?

a. ) A newspaper
b. ) A skunk in a blender-that one is kind of gross
c. ) A nun with a rash

I think that's enough.
Now back to chilling out.

You know, nothing that makes any sense or means anything or is even really very good. Shooting pics ain't always easy. Sometimes you gotta just shoot things that make your head turn.

*Note to self: Sometimes, it might be smart to pair them with a photo or two that ain't so random.

Oh well.  Happy day to you.

Sans Silver

Linking up with Kathy at "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" for songography where this week the song is Silver Bells.

Here's how many silver bells I saw out and about this week:  zero.  Didn't see any children laughing either.  Kinda didn't see any children at all come to think of it.  So stretch with me here.

Actually it was kind of a lengthy text.  She could be people passing and if you want to cut me a break, those decorations have gold-so....you know.  Oh and city sidewalks I got that in the teeny tiny mill town.  This is the only street with any businesses on it.  Like 4 businesses.  Like you don't have to look to cross the street.  Wicked good breakfast place though.

Struggling with the light, or better yet, the lack of light.  One more week until the soltice-and the turn.  Dark by 4:00, even a touch before, and a sun slow to make an appearance in the a.m. It's hard to find a window of time to make things happen in daylight.

But in the push, I have turned out some great shots-simply by trying to find something to fill the bill.  There are definitely some uglier results, but here are 3 that I'm really happy with.

That grocery shot I took after noticing while checking out.  I told the cashier "that would make a great photo" to which she replied only with a look on her face "you remember to take your meds?".....out to my car, got the camera, went back in, snapped a few and showed her.  Then she said outloud, "wow, that's a really cool shot".

You just never know.  I'm still thankful to Anita over at "Did You Bring Your Camera?" for being the impetus to do so.  By the way, her pics are amazing.  Punch thru and give a look.

It's Beginning.....

Side Door

Linking with my friend Kathy over at "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" for this week's Songography. Thank you hostess.

Well it is "beginning to look like Christmas" if you dig it white like Bing.  I don't listen to the weather terrorists, but we're getting plenty-LLBean pac boots deep.  I'd rather "dig it" in sneakers and jeans vs. boots and down, but whatever.  Here we go.  I'll have my grass back 4 long months from now.

Dock Square

Last weekend before the "S" word arrived.  I got up super early and hit downtown Kennebunkport-tourist mecca.  Each December they host "Christmas Prelude".  The shops all decorate and people flock from all over New England and further to shop and enjoy the activities.  Me....I hibernate.

I loved catching this scene totally void of cars and people.  As if the lights and decorations (and handy places to park) were all for me.  I guess they were.

Hopefully back on track after an extended absence.  I'm not apologizing for being out of the loop, but I'll try to hop back on the spinning Merry-Go-Round blogging land can be and re-connect with my blogging buddies.  Worst part of having to step back is missing you all.  Thanks to those of you who checked in to see if I was still breathing.

This is the merry-go-round I've been on (and yes this pic is intentionally blurred).  I've just completed a class in web development at the local community college where almost all my classmates were 20.  I like them.  They made me laugh.  While I was swearing trying to get my brain to work.

I've been glued to the computer doing HTML and CSS-I had no idea what CSS was and only knew to say "HTML" and that <  , > , " ", and = signs were going to be involved.  Egad.  I had to record all the lessons, listen back again and take copious notes to try and understand SOME of it.

Meanwhile Matty K., a pudgy 19 year old who's likely spent his life up to now sitting in front of a computer screen would lean over and say "ah, you're missing a close tag."  WHAT?  How could he see that in a page full of symbols? Kids!  He finished his homework in class, I finished mine in 10-12 frustration filled hours during the week.  Kids!

And I learned how to make a respectable website from scratch.  No WordPress or DreamWeaver or template things.
Wow.  I'm a rock star.

Looking forward to catching up with you soon.

Songography

Linking with my friend Kathy at "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" for Songography.

This week's tune, What a Wonderful World....a beautiful song.  There are songs I hear and think "if I never hear this song again, it will fine and dandy".  This is not one of those songs.  I think it's a song almost anyone can emotionally attach to.  When I was a music teacher I often taught it to my 2nd graders.  Kids singing this song, definitely a grab the tissue moment for most adults.

Anyway-
Onward.

The other evening on my way home from work I was stumped for a photo of the day for my 365.  After dark.  Eeeeek.  Not a good scenario.  I walked along Main Street and through a large window happened upon a busy gallery.  Opening night for a showing called "100 Birds for Haiti".

The Birds
The Birds

I was shooting from outside and thought-"D'oh, I could go inside". Honestly, my brain is not functioning well these days.  Glad I did.  Turns out local artists were asked to paint a bird or birds on a small format canvas like 5 x5 or 4x6.  100 pieces were collected and put on display.

Each painting is priced at $100. Half of the money will be retained by the artist, with the other half going to Haiti to help with the continuing need there.

On the Bar
On the Bar

I think that's a pretty cool idea, and hope they can raise the funds they want to. If I were in a better place financially I'd purchase one. This is another testament to "What a Wonderful World" we live in. At times I think the corporate world can't see what artists, starving artists, contribute to it.

In case you're curious about my 365 I went for this shot I took next door at the barbershop.  And no, I didn't go inside this place.

Photo-Heart

Linking with Kat, thank you Kat, at Kat Eye Studio for this month's Photo Heart Connection.

Whether or not you are interested in this monthly practice, I encourage you to visit Kat's website.  She offers a lot of great classes.  Something might just fit your interests.

Earlier this month out of the blue I was asked to an all day event.  10 area artists had been invited to a beautiful remote spot on the coast of Maine.  The setting included a large old farmhouse surrounded by open fields.  On the property there also sat a stunning Shaker barn in pristine condition converted for use by people rather than horses or cows.  The home-owner was gracious to offer access to the site.

 Plein Air 49/365
Plein Air 49/365

Each artist wandered the property searching for "the spot" of inspiration.  My job was to capture the sense of the day-the artists in the field, so to speak.  Some of my images would be used on a website.

Timber Point Center Working Group is raising awareness and funds to use a nearby home formerly owned by architect and artist Charles Ewing.  Located on preserve land the house is inaccessible to anyone, yet it is ideally suited as a very low-impact meeting place.  It is in need of upkeep and the group is looking for reasonable use-a blending of nature and humans.  While preserving land is important-if no one can ever use or enjoy it, what is the point?

Balance.

I think balance is needed in many of these preserved areas.  What makes a fern or baby shrimp more important than a person?  Can't we find a win-win here?  They allow hunters on the land with license during certain seasons of the year.  Why not artists or those studying nature?

Ooooh, politics.  I don't do politics.

Anyhow-my PHC was much more personal and selfish.  As I was wandering the fields and shore visiting with each artist and photographing them, it hit me that THIS is what I love to do with my camera.  A documentary style of photography.  A balance between capturing an event-not a wedding-but something with a story-that includes people and scenery.  I really love doing that, not sitting at a craft fair amongst note cards and matted and sleeved 8 x 10's.

I've vowed to no longer work without financial reward of some kind.  I broke my rule here-it was an opportunity for me and allowed me to also be artist.  I will receive a tax-write off for my donation.

I was disappointed. Only one of the 12 images I spent 3 hours selecting and editing was used for the website.  They used 2 others shot by their friend-unedited and more amateur.  If that works for them, it is fine, but I don't think the average person understands the difference and the work involved in creating photographic art.  This is another example of why it's important to VALUE my work as an artist.

They asked for 45 more images "for the archives"....I indicated that I wouldn't do that work without being paid.  They didn't care if they were edited or not-but I do.  I won't let my work out-put my name on it, until it's satisfactory to me.  No can do.

The value here was my photo heart connection.
I shall cheat and include a couple of bonus shots.  I'm currently taking a computer coding class and having a hard time making blogging time....forgive me for stretching the ONE photo that makes the PHC.
The day; that was the PHC for me.
