End of August

The August Break 2013

Today concludes August (sniff, sniff) and the August break courtesy of Susannah Conway.  It's been fun.

When you're smiling......

This morning I am smiling.  Today is the last day of my 365 and I did it!  I never missed a day.  Yay me.  I look forward to taking a fresh look at my images and seeing if I can sense the improvement over the year.

Here's today's picture and it's not very good, but it is fun.  In the cigar shop window....I placed myself behind the Indian duplicating his pose.  Silly really, but when you walk Main Street at 6:15 a.m., no one sees what you're doing.  Kim Klassen's "inspired" texture helped clean up the yucky glaring reflections that didn't help and inspired is how I feel knowing I completed this journey.
Tomorrow, I start again.

This image feels like a sign.
The sun is tilting toward fall, and the tourist trolley isn't as full as it was 2 months ago.
Neither is my heart.

Favorite 8/29/13

Ajar

What's my favorite thing?  Light.  Love it.
Ask me tomorrow or the next or the next and you'll get a different answer.  I think ol' Maria was on to something when she sang about her "Favorite Things", plural.  Maybe it is Rogers and Hammerstein that deserve the credit.

Pretty soon August will be done breaking-and be totally broken.  Sad face. : (

August 28th

Capturing a scent in images-that's a tricky task.  I suppose capturing any of the other senses, outside of touch can be.  When I thought of smell, the first thing that came to mind was skunk.  That ain't good.

Smells can be so pleasant-here's one.

Pizza {sh 39}

And then there are smells that one must be a stout and quick photographer to capture.

Bait Fish

Lobster boat images have a certain quaintness but often times you have to deal with the smell of the bait shed too.  It's a trade off.

Number Games

Closed for the Night
Closed for the Night 360/365

I'm so close to completing my 365, I can practically taste it.  I haven't missed a day.  This was yesterday's effort that went down after dark-cuz I didn't play it right during the light hours of the day, but I got it done, and I kind of like it.
Kind of Hopper-esque in the mood.  Film Noir.  I like that moody bit.

How am I going to celebrate completing my 365 you might wonder? (or not).

I'm going to do ANOTHER 365.  Call me crazy.
I have a few friends that have decided to join me in this challenge.  You can call them crazy too, if you like. If you're interested in craziness, let me know and I'll get in touch.

A 365 always increases your skills; practice, practice, practice.  You'll never become worse at anything if you practice.  This time I'm going to focus on increasing my skills at BW photography.  I am reluctant to do an exclusive BW 365-sometimes it's just hard enough getting an image done (see above), but my goal will be to learn to see BW better-perhaps even while taking the shot, not just in processing.

I made myself this collage logo.  Sure, if you have a logo there's better chance you'll succeed.
Yah right.  I'm just trying to psyche myself out.

 YES!
Yes, I did go to an amusement park located in the neighboring town of Old Orchard Beach.
I've never-never been there before, except in the off-season when it's essentially a ghost town.

I don't have kids so, I don't go to amusement parks.  This park, practically ON the beach, reeks of cheap pizza and french fries, has lots of beach-clad visitors....(um eeek), and there arechildren everywhere crashing into you because they're overwhelmed with the fun of it all.  And that's OK-that's how it's supposed to be.

YES.

I didn't ride any rides.  My "ride" was capturing the pageantry and color of it all.  Being an observer to the frenzy.

Then my true YES moment happened.

YES!

The light started easing down yet it was still there at the top of the Ferris Wheel.  I decided I should ride it.  YES.  It cost 5 BUCKS to ride the Ferris wheel!  I had $20 in my pocket to last until next Friday, but I thought I'd splurge and kick myself later.

Pay It Forward
Ferris Wheel

There was a little girl with her Dad in line behind me.  I chatted with him a bit.  Even though the line was pretty short, it wasn't moving fast and the light was going.  Hurry up!

Finally my time to get aboard and the attendant pointed to the sign "no single riders".  WHAT?
I asked the man in line if I could ride with  he and his daughter which he agreed.

As they came to the attendant, he showed the "ride a gazillion rides for too much money" bracelet he'd purchased for his girl.  Required to accompany her due to size/age he started for the ride hand and hand with her when the attendant indicated he also had to have one for himself.

WHAT?

I've never made a Pay it Forward moment in my life.

YES!

Yes I did.  I insisted he take it, and I walked away, feeling I hadn't missed a thing.
It was $5 well spent.

White Horse

Besides the Carousel was right around the corner.

YES!

I realize for most the August Break is about brevity, I just didn't feel like being brief today.  Thanks for reading my story.

Sunday

Before the lawn mowers start and the scooters scratch down the street....

Sunday morning feels like this:

Unless you're my cat, then it looks like this even when the lawn mowers start and the scooters scratch down the street.
My next life, I totally want to be a house cat.

My blogger layout function is being nasty this morning, so I won't do iconic August Break, I'll just say this is part of the August break and call out Susannah at SusannahConway.com as the impetus for my continual daily blog posts this month.

I can feel it slipping away.  Summer is so short here in Maine.  Too short.  Some say we have two seasons here, winter and July/August.  That just ain't nat'rul.

I used to teach-and worked very hard, but there were those 5 weeks in the summer where you could rejuvenate.  I have a hard time watching my neighbors who are teachers, well until next week when they have to start draggin' their sorry asses out of bed to leave the house by 7:00.

All season I am surrounded by tourists vacationing and I sit in an office-gazing out the window at "it".    When my administrative assistant heads out for lunch I make her promise me she'll come back.  If I had a week off or something, it might help.

Today I'm going to zip down to the beach, (since I'm not working...shhhh, don't break the good karma), with a book and a pair of sunnies and catch me an hour or so of vacation time, and the summer wind.

Sacred

Church and Tree {8/52}
Church and Tree

My mind pops to "church" when I hear the word sacred.  The formality of the building, the patterns of the pews, the beauty of windows, stained glass, and altars.

Alas, it is not for me.

Warm Spring
Warm Spring

For me sacred comes in nature.  A walk in the woods or near the sea,
often in solitude.  The steady walking motion lets my mind find a meditation of moving thoughts, unlike those who sit still and empty their minds of thought.  That stillness too is not for me.

A Wee Weed {21/52}

Most of all, light is sacred to me. It influences my well-being physically and emotionally. It is the key.

It is in these places of solitude, nature, and light I find much inspiration for my photography.  That is another kind of sacred all together.

Thought I was just shooting an old beat up car when this little fellow popped his head up.  We startled each other.  He snuck out the other side through a rusted hole near the running board.

Turns out this car is claimed to be formerly owned by someone in the mafia in NY.  Bullet holes on the driver's side window.  Eeeek.
Time to watch The Godfather again.

I'm not an old car expert-but this is a Kaiser, from late 40's I believe.  Bet it was DE-luxe in it's day.

Susannah Conway at SusannahConway.com has provided all these fabulous prompts for the August break.  I am very thankful.  I've had trouble making daily blogging happen and these have helped bring my "habit" back.  Maybe I should take a September break too.

I'm a Friend of Nat's

I bought these a year ago.  I still feel irreverent each time I wear them.  I love that.

Running on Empty?

Oh no, that's Jackson Browne.

Linking with my friend Kathy over at You'll Shoot Your Eye Out for this week's songography.  I'm getting really hooked on this linky-thanks hostess.  This week's task-Born to Run.

Like the Wind
Like the Wind

Ever see something out of the corner of your eye and know you've got to have it?
Yah.

She was riding next to me-(well, me in my car) along a tree lined road.
Accelerate, park quickly and try to get "in a place".....and be quick about it!
See I guess I was born to run this week too.  "Watch out everybody.  Photog running with a camera!"

I see horses trotting along, or walking with an owner-but cantering or galloping or whatever it is they do when they're going fast?  Almost never.  While this isn't a spot on, stop in your tracks, pan shot....I like the sense of motion in the horse, rider and even more so the blur in the sunlit grasses.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Now Pops is taking me out for breakfast, so I'll be back to do some visiting later today.
